BOOKING & RETREATS
On July 16, 2010, I (Joel) boarded a plane bound for Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Through a series of incredibly odd circumstances, I met Michael Farren at the Pittsburgh airport. I ended up driving with him to an event we were both “booked” at in New Jersey. As we drove and talked, I remember thinking, “I like this guy. He’s a great mix of sincerity, honesty and hilarity.” When you get around Michael, the question isn’t if you’re going to laugh, but are your sides going to hurt after you’re done. The weather was perfect that night on the Jersey shore, Michael led worship and I shared the Gospel with the thousands attending. Hundreds made decisions to follow Christ.
In one of our conversations that weekend, Michael asked me where I lived.
I replied, “I live in Keller, Texas, but in, less than two weeks, I’m moving to a little town called Spring Hill, in Tennessee.”
Pressing his lips firmly together. Michael smirked.
I semi-hesitantly asked, “Do you know where that is?
”Michael said, “Yes, that’s where I live...”
On August 1st, I moved into a house, about one mile from Michael.
Michael and I began to meet weekly for breakfast. What transpired over the next six months were some of the most vulnerable and real conversations I’d ever had. As we shared the pains and the joys of our life journeys, we discovered that we had faced many of the same difficulties. Our wounds exposed to the light of the truth began to heal. Feelings of despair, anger and bitterness were replaced with feelings of strength, joy and life!
We were honest, transparent and vulnerable and God used these mornings to transform my life. I recovered my heart and, with my heart’s recovery, I found renewed vision and strength to overcome what, prior, seemed so be insurmountable. Michael discovered the same.
Our story is the inspiration for Expedition retreat. Michael and I, personally, know what can be recovered when men journey together—namely, our hearts. And with that restored heart, comes our strength, joy and life! We believe that this is best accomplished in honest, transparent and vulnerable relationships with other men. This is something incredibly difficult to achieve as a lone individual in a large group setting. That’s why we have limited the retreat in size. We are inviting you into something more than just another good men’s retreat. We are inviting you into a fellowship—a circle of friends—a brotherhood. Let us be the first to say, “Welcome to the Expedition!”
